Jeffore’s Square, Jany. 29, 1787.
Mr B: Vaughan presents his respectful compts: to Mr. Adams, and has the pleasure to return many thanks for his most acceptable present of his book, which he looked over with much avidity, & forwarded to a respectable friend that he might derive the same pleasure from it. Mr. V: hopes that it may make a favorable impression in various respects in this country, as well as in America & other countries. Mr V:, when he receives back the copy he has been favored with, expects no less satisfaction from the second perusal of it, than that which he received from the first.
Mrs Vaughan’s confinement as a nurse makes it impossible for her to dine abroad with any of her friends, but Mr. Vaughan will have the honor to wait upon Mr & Mrs. Adams on Tuesday the 6th. of Feby.
Mr V: will take the liberty in a day or two to forward a letter for Mr Jefferson, in answer to one just received from him, of which he begs leave to solicit the care of Mr Adams or Colo. Smith.
Mr Vaughan requests the favor of Mr. Adams’s company to dinner on Sunday next at 4 o’clock precisely, it being designed afterwards to proceed to Mr Fawcett’s lecture. If Col. Smith has any curiosity to hear that gentleman, Mr V: will also be extremely happy in his company.
