To Colonel John Crane

Head Quarters Fredericksbg [N.Y.] 3d Novr 1778

Sir

I have recd a request from Lieut. Dunnell of your Regt for liberty to resign.1 He has produced your Certificate that he is not indebted to the Regt or public. You may therefore indorse his discharge upon his Commission. Be pleased to inform me of the time of resignation that I may register and transmit it to the Board of War. I am &c.

1. Zacheus Dunnell (Donnell; 1749–1789) of Boston served from June to December 1775 as a sergeant in Col. William Gridley’s Massachusetts Artillery Regiment before being appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Continental Artillery Regiment in January 1777. He apparently rose to the rank of first lieutenant before his resignation. No letter from Dunnell to GW has been identified.
