Dear Sir,

My Son Richard Rush has requested me to beg the favor of you to accept of the enclosed pamphflet upon the Administration of Justice in Pennsylvania.1 At the same time, receive Dear Sir a copy of three lectures upon Animal life extracted from a new edition of my medical inquiries now in the press,2 a Mark of the great regard, of your sincere & Affectionate Old friend

2Rush’s Three Lectures upon Animal Life, Delivered in the University of Pennsylvania was first published as a pamphlet in Philadelphia in 1799. A revised edition appeared as “An Inquiry into the Cause of Animal Life” in Rush’s Medical Inquiries and Observations (3d ed.; 4 vols.; Philadelphia, 1809; Shaw and Shoemaker description begins R. R. Shaw and R. H. Shoemaker, comps., American Bibliography: A Preliminary Checklist for 1801-1819 (22 vols. to date; New York, 1958-). description ends 18548), 1:1–99. The preface to this edition bears the date 31 Oct. 1809. Rush apparently sent to JM either the 1799 pamphlet or an offprint from the 1809 edition.
