Transmitted To You: TJ recorded two letters from the Treasury Department in SJL on 25 Jan. The one concerning “Indn. trading houses” is noted at TJ to the Senate and the House of Representatives, at this date below. The other, recorded in SJL without a notation, has not been found. Gallatin’s letter to John Randolph in relation to certain appropriations may have pertained to the bill for “making certain partial appropriations” for 1802, introduced by Randolph on 5 Feb. The appropriations included $60,000 for the pay of the army, an additional $1,400 for the printing of public accounts, and other payments. TJ signed the appropriations act on 23 Feb.
