From William Heberden1

[January 1, 1767?2]

Dr. Heberden sends his compliments to Dr. Franklin, and desires the favor of his company at dinner on tuesday next (Jan. 6th.) at half an hour past three.

Addressed: To / Mr. Franklin / Craven Street

1For William Heberden, one of 18th century England’s most eminent physicians, to whose pamphlet on inoculation for smallpox BF had written a preface during his first mission, see above, VIII, 281 n.

2January 6, for which date Heberden invited BF to dinner, fell on Tuesday in 1767 and 1772 during BF’s second mission. The present note, obviously written a few days before January 6, is placed in the earlier of the two possible years in accordance with editorial practice.
